Krakow, one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Poland, is an attractive destination for tourists thanks to its rich history, culture and unique atmosphere. Situated on the Vistula River, Krakow was once the royal capital and today is known for its well-preserved medieval center, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The heart of the city is the Main Square (Rynek Główny), one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. It is home to the iconic Marian Basilica, with its stunning Gothic altar, and the Cloth Hall, a historic building where today you can find a marketplace and galleries.
One of the most important sights is the Wawel Royal Castle, which towers over the city on Wawel Hill. This majestic castle was the seat of Polish kings and a tour of it will reveal rich art collections, crown jewels and magnificent royal chambers. Nearby is the Cathedral of St. Stanislaus and Wenceslas, which served as the place of coronation of Polish kings.
Krakow also has a darker side to its history, which is reminded by the former Jewish quarter of Kazimierz and the nearby Auschwitz concentration camp. These places are important memorials to the victims of the Second World War and at the same time a reminder of the tragic events that took place here.
A visit to Krakow offers a great combination of history, culture and relaxation. Strolling through narrow streets, visiting traditional restaurants and being able to admire preserved historical buildings make this city an extraordinary place to explore.
